1985 Toyota Pickup – Orbit-Eye Toyota

Tweaking Technology to Eliminate Twisted Springs
From the July, 2005 issue of Off-Road
By Kevin Blumer
Photography by Kevin Blumer

Leaf springs lead a tough life. They are faced with the dual responsibility of both locating and suspending axles. Over thousands of cycles, leaf springs eventually fatigue and either sag or break. Whether on a high-speed desert-runner or creepy-crawly trail rig, leaf packs are subjected to stress sufficient to send springs curled up and whimpering to the proverbial corner.

Advanced Off-Road Research of Grand Junction, Colorado, hit a winning chord with the invention of new technology to eliminate the age-old problem of twisted, fatigued leaf springs. Dubbed the Orbit-Eye, this spherical bearing is similar to the Heim joints that make linkage suspensions long on both performance and durability. Orbit-Eyes were designed specifically to stand up to the stress experienced by spring eye bushings.

The Orbit Eye works to alleviate the problems that arise with today’s rigs and the greater wheel articulation that they offer. When the spherical bearings twist instead of the leaf springs, the result is a leaf pack that lives longer and can move more freely. Since the springs are free to stuff and droop without twisting laterally, inter-leaf friction is reduced and suspension action becomes smoother. Since traditional leaf packs inherently act as antisway bars, Orbit-Eye springs may be ordered with a traditional urethane bushing in one of the ends for a great combination of street stability and off-road suspension flex.

We took an ’85 Toyota pickup that was already trial-worthy and kicked up the performance factor several notches.

1967 Nissan Patrol – Adventure Patrol

A Functional ’67 Nissan Patrol
From the November, 2003 issue of 4Wheel Drive & Sport Utility
By Kevin McNulty
Photography by Kevin McNulty

It’s not every day that you see a Nissan Patrol rolling down the trail, so when Sheldon Neal of Irvine, California, went searching for his perfect four-wheel vehicle and ran across this rare ’67 Patrol, he couldn’t get it home fast enough to start on its restoration and buildup. He knew he had quite a chore ahead of him, though, as parts for these vehicles are very hard to come by.

Sheldon’s solution to the scarcity of OE Patrol parts was to restore the vehicle with high-quality custom components. Because this would be his extreme-use trail rig, Sheldon needed more power and durability than the factory components originally offered. The little Nissan engine had already been swapped out before Sheldon acquired the vehicle in favor of a Chevy 327ci powerplant. Sheldon rebuilt the top end, including porting and polishing new performance heads, and then fit the engine with all the right performance components, such as a Holley Pro-Jection fuel system, an Accel distributor, Hedman headers, and a 3-inch Flowmaster exhaust system for aspiration. Transferring the power to the ground is a Turbo 400 transmission coupled to a dependable Dana Spicer Model 18 transfer case.

For the suspension and driveline work, Sheldon dropped the Patrol off at T&J’s Performance Center in Orange, California.

Toyota Tacoma BDS Suspension Lift Kit

Posted by T&J Performance On April - 11 - 2011

In this tough economy we’ve all had to cinch our belt a few notches, but that doesn’t mean we should neglect our cherished 4x4s. If you’re on a meager budget and looking to increase your truck’s off-road capabilities, there are ways to modify it without breaking the bank. Obviously you can’t purchase a coilover suspension dirt-cheap, but you can find a budget lift that isn’t just a compromise.

Front and Rear Suspension System – Off-Road Magazine

Posted by T&J Performance On March - 24 - 2011

We don’t really cover Jeeps too often at OFF-ROAD Magazine. Instead we leave those to our other dirthead magazines, and we hit hard on fullsize trucks and prerunners in our pages. That being said, we cannot deny the absolute beauty of an all-purpose off-road vehicle-no matter what type it is. But if we’re building a Jeep, it’s going to have to be either a fullsize Jeep (FSJ) or a unibody. Classic Cherokees (XJs) with unibodies (or unit bodies) can be found going fast in the dirt, climbing over rocks, and charging through the gnarliest off-road terrains. That’s why it was an easy choice to start on my all-purpose XJ build that I picked up for $400. Last month we concentrated on the Hesco head and other engine modifications and updates that Jeeps R Us made to my non-running Cherokee. Not only did Jeeps R Us get it running again, the crew there also added more power and fuel efficiency to boot.

A Hemi and All-Wheel Drive Pin the Fun Factor Wide Open

Have you ever been in the midst of a group of Jeep traditionalists? If not, just memorize the phrase “change is bad.” Repeat as necessary until you can be heard saying it in your sleep. You’re now ready for a proper dyed-in-the-flatfender Jeepin’ conversation. To test your Jeepthenticity, keep an eye peeled for a half dozen traditionalists drooling over vintage Jeepin’ iron at a trail event. Take a few mental notes, make a friendly comment or two, and slink away from the traditionalists. It’s time to expand your horizons.

While the Jeep brand is strongly identified with the short-wheelbase, trail-crawlin’ machine that sports the boxy, seven-slot grille, Jeep-branded vehicles have explored and conquered every continent at speeds both high and low. The “go anywhere” heritage means that for a Jeep to be a Jeep, it has to be good at a little of everything.

JeepSpeed founder Clive Skilton is a hand-in-glove fit for the “go anywhere” motto. His racing resume includes 500cc Superbikes, sports car road racing, and NHRA Top Fuel drag racing in addition to many an off-road rally in various corners of the globe. Specifically, those corners include the southern tip of South America in 1995 with a three-Jeep (two Wranglers and one Grand Cherokee) American Racing Wheels World Expedition racing team, and building and racing a Kia Sportage in the 2005 Barcelona to Dakar rally.

Jeep J8 Worldwide Trialling

Posted by T&J Performance On March - 17 - 2011

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-C2oc8rhHg&feature=player_embedded’]Check out a few Jeep J8’s being put through the motions.

In its ongoing quest to return the Jeep name to its military roots, Chrysler has just put the J8 through ballistic and blast certification. The company says that its using a new manufacturing technique by hot-forming steel to create a protective shell for the vehicle. Sounds fancy, and evidently it’s tough enough to take the kind of abuse necessary to be awarded BRV 2009 VR7 ballistic protection certification. What does all that mean? No matter what your daily commute throws at you, chances are this beefed-up Wrangler will get you to work in one piece.

The J8 is currently being marketed to military, government and private security operations that require the kind of vehicle that can drive through a hail of small-arms fire without getting perforated. There are also a number other configurations available – everything from well-armed patrol vehicles to troop and cargo transports.

1972 Chevy K5 Blazer – Blazing Orange

A Classic First-Generation K5 Blazer
From the February, 2009 issue of 4Wheel & Off-Road
By Kevin McNulty
Some People Just Have To Do Things Right the first time, and we wholeheartedly agree with such an approach. When Ron Perry and his family were looking for a functional off-road toy for weekend adventures, they found their perfect machine, a cool ’72 K5 Blazer. They weren’t looking for extreme, just a rig that could safely and reliably take them anywhere they chose to go across Southern California’s mountains and deserts. What they got was a little of both.
