High-velocity Jeeps were a relatively unknown phenomenon just a few years ago. Many thought that the term “Jeepspeed” was nothing short of an oxymoron. No matter. Mike Barnett, Tom Barnett, and the rest of the crew at T&J Performance Center simply lowered their heads and kept building Jeep after Jeep that worked at high speed as well as in low range. Many of these fast-and-slow Jeeps were XJ Cherokees built for competition in the Jeepspeed series.

When the four-door JK Wrangler appeared in 2007, Mike and Tom saw much more than a traditional backcountry explorer in the offing. “When the four-door JK came out, we knew we needed to get one for the shop,” Mike Barnett revealed. “The wheelbase lends itself to be perfect in both slow and faster applications. With four doors, there’s more utility and it’s more family-friendly. On top of that, it’s an ideal recon vehicle for our race team, and it makes a reliable prerunner.”

A once over of the T&J JK reveals a variety of mods that work well by themselves. When combined on the same vehicle, they take it “from a boy to a man,” as Mike said.

2007 E350 4WD Van Conversion

Posted by T&J Performance On October - 28 - 2010

We started with a 2007 Stock 12 Person 2WD I-Beam E350 Van and wound up with this beast. After doing a lot of research we found that the U-Joint Offroad road kit was the best on the market and soon after we placed our order for the U-Joint 4″ kit and couldn’t wait to get this kit here. This kit included everything we needed to get our stocker to be a monster.

  • CK001 Conversion Kit
  • Front Springs
  • SK004 Steering Kit
  • WS001 Rear Wheel Spacers
  • FS001 Front Shock Mounts
  • FT001 Fuel Tank Shortening Kit
  • UB004 Front U-bolts
  • BL004 Brake Lines
  • AD001 Rear Add a Leaf
  • SB001 Sway Bar Links
  • Bilstein 5100 series shocks front & rear

The kit was a moderate install. We had no welding at all and very little drilling. The components that were supplied were a perfect fit for the stock locations and were made from top notch parts. Each step of this project was as easy as the last and never had us wishing it was designed a different way.

We also added some of our own T&J flair to this build. Including an interior cage and custom drop down gun racks.

We have a lot more instore for this build so keep coming back and checking us out. Future upgrades include:

  • Custom Roof Rack
  • Emergency Lighting
  • Door mount Spot lights

Jim Richardson – 1986 Chevy Blazer Military M-1009

Posted by T&J Performance On August - 4 - 2010

1986 Chevy Blazer Military M-1009 Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle

(CUCV pronounced “cuck-vee”) ¾ Ton, 24 Volts

The M-1009 is a Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle (CUCV pronounced “cuck-vee”), a military modified Chevrolet/General Motors Model K10516 Blazer with a 3/4 ton rating. The CUCVs were an attempt by the U.S. military to use COTS (commercial, off-the-shelf) vehicles with minor modification in non-combat roles. This effort to save money was not very successful and eventually all CUCV units where replaced by HMMWVs.

The M1009 was produced for the U.S. military from 1983 to 1986. The M1009 differs from the civilian Blazer in that it has a heavier spring in the suspension and has no air conditioning. The electrical system is a hybrid 12/24 volt, with most of the truck running on GMC OME 12 volt electrics, but the glow plugs, the starter, and the military slave cable jack are at 24 volts. The M1009 has a pair of 12v alternators and batteries wired in series to supply the 24 volt circuit. The glow plugs are standard 12 volt plus wired through a bank of resistors to run properly on the 24 volt side.
